FISHING FEATURES

Winning strategies for blue granders Part 1 – Preparing for battle
If you want to take on a blue marlin of more than 1000 pounds, who better to prepare you for battle than the skipper that has probably caught more grander marlin than anyone else in the world. Capt Peter Bristow will show you how to catch yours.

The explosive world of Hoodlums on top-water lures
Techniques to reliably catch some of the world’s largest yellowtail kingfish on cast surface-lures is a phenomenon only recently enabled by significant advances in tackle and lure design. Mark Armistead is at the cutting-edge of developments and in this feature he details what is working and how you can get among this explosive action.

Rowley shoals at last!
This revered West Australian sailfish hotspot is now more accessible than ever before, and surprises Tim Simpson with its other large billfish on offer.

Delightfully light:
Australia’s southern waters have produced a startling run of bluefin over recent years. Chris Baty discovers the joy of fishing for them with light tackle.

king of the underworld:  Amberjack:
Dr Julian Pepperell profiles the largest member of the Seriola clan, a respected thug and a tough adversary on any tackle.

technically speaking: The Compleat Deckie
To be successful in the cockpit of an active gameboat, you need the right tools and the accessories that work.

Creatures of the Deep: Tripletail

It might seem out of place on a vast blue ocean, but this amazing fish actually travels the globe by riding the currents.

lure lore: Q: To dolphinfish or not to dolphinfish?
Jim Rizzuto discusses the very good reasons why marlin may rarely eat dolphinfish – but would they want to?

smoke and mirrors: Hollowpoint – Cabo DV8

The 12-inch Cabo may be the smallest of Hollowpoint’s DV8 range, but it packs a deadly punch with a wicked action.

BOATS AND MORE
the illusionist: Luhrs 35 Convertible

At first glance, the exterior of Luhrs’ very spacious 35-footer may seem a little retro. But as Warren Steptoe discovered, its functionality and build-quality delivers a very practical sea boat that together with its twin Volvo IPS drives is surprisingly economical.

still ahead of the game: Seafarer Voyager

Warren Steptoe revisits this much-loved trailerboat, now made even better with new generation 4-stroke outboards.

speed and economy: Powercat 2900 Sports Fisherman
This twin-hulled Powercat carves a smooth ride at speed, while delivering outstanding fuel economy.

New Eyre Custom Rods for Bite Me

Owen loads up an Eyre Rod on 4kg with a stubbourn Southern Bluefin Tuna

Owen Spalding and his mate Graeme were here last winter for a few days fishing aboard Bite Me. We had some fun with the wahoo on 15kg, then we switched to 10kg and 8kg line classes for some light tackle challenges.
With some good successes under our belts (Owen smashed the 8kg Barracuda Fiji National Record) we had a play with the 4kg ultra-light gear and a chance of a World Record.
We had one potential record sharked and landed several fish that were just shy of setting records but Owen and Graeme definately caught the Ultra Light Tackle bug.
Owen has now started his own rod building company - Eyre Rods and hand crafts custom ultra-light rods for World Record hunters (and nutters wanting to fish for trophy gamefish on 1-4kg)
Bite Me will be carrying a full spread of these rods this coming winter wahoo season and we fully expect to take yet another wahoo IGFA World Record.
With a little help from Halco we have all the ingredients to challenge ALL the IGFA ultra-light wahoo records.
The latest rods are currently being tested on the Southern Bluefin Tuna and proving more than capable.

We look forward to giving them a good workout on the Kadavu wahoo aboard Bite Me

New Great Barracuda Record

Tim Simpson, Editor of Australia's prestigious BlueWater magazine recently visited Matava Eco-Adventure Resort to co-host a couple of episodes of Bill Boyce's new show IGFA Saltwater Adventures. This show is soon to be aired on the WFN in the USA.
In between a bit of general gamefishing, Tim found time to run a couple of his ultra-light outfits and tested a couple of the new Fin Nor reels spooled with Platypus Pre-Test 3kg line

Tim is more concerned about his potential M-03 Fiji Record as Bill checks out the footage

Safe aboard !

This new pending Fiji National Record Great Barracuda was tempted by a Halco Laser-Pro, our favored lure choice when hunting for IGFA World Records.
On Tim's last visit he landed the new and still current IGFA Wahoo World Record on 4kg line with a Halco Laser Pro 190.

Late March GT Popping Update

Returning regular popper casting angler Le returns for another crack at the Kadavu GTs. This time with fellow fisho Matt from Australia.

Matt with a nice Kadavu GT

The weather was a bit average, some swell, a day or two of thundery rain showers...

Made an interesting back-drop view from the outer barrier reef slopes

The bite in general was a bit slow on some days with some unusual current directions and coloured water closing down some of our favourite stretches of reef but an improvement in the weather meant access to some rarely fished areas. (Joe's secret spots) At the right tide time the bite was good.

Just some of the boy's weaponry

Best fish of the week was this nice GT over 30kg for Matt

Rare White Marlin Caught in Fiji Islands

A very rare White Marlin alongside Bite Me. Joe prepares to swim the little marlin after removing the hook. It was caught trolling one of the new 8" skirted lures from Australia's Gotcha Going lures.

Tom was very happy with his rare White Marlin catch

Some more pics from Baja

Some of the Resort's fleet of 'Super Pangas' that the guests use to go fishing

A 'Super Panga' on the beach ready to go

Splash some cash for one of their larger boats
Not as big as Bite Me but great for day trips out into the Sea of Cortez

Believe it or not the Pangas are launched and recovered using a great big green tractor !

Now that's gotta be fun !

Did I go fishing ? NO ! I'm on HOLIDAY !

Skipper Takes A Break

Its a hard life being a charterboat skipper....Day after day out there fishing aboard Bite Me....
Where does a hard working skipper take a break ?
How about the Sonora Desert ? Baja, Mexico...... A nice little Hacienda on the Baja East Cape called Rancho Leonero...

Now I'm searching the skies for Buzzards...

The March "Super Moon" rises over the Sea of Cortez

Course the trouble with the Sonora Desert is its surrounded by the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean....one of the finest gamefishing destinations on the planet.....There are humpback whales and whale sharks just cruising by out front....bait balls getting smashed by Jack Crevelle and yellowtail kingfish......yellowfin...striped marlin moving in...Roosterfish all along the beach....
Sigh.....Guess I am just going to have to bite the bullet and go fishing....
