The waters surrounding Namotu Island are filled with numerous fish species. A fertile underwater ecosystem offers everything from Marlin and Wahoo to Tuna and Mahi Mahi. There's plenty to challenge even the most experienced anglers.

Game fishing in Fiji is one of the most popular activities on Namotu. Even those who come to surf take time off to enjoy the pleasures of tracking, luring and capturing their prey. They're rewarded with a delicious dinner made of that day's catch.

When you visit Namotu, you'll have access to the island's fishing experts. They'll point you to the best spots and offer useful tips on how to maximise your haul. Following is an overview that will help you prepare for the adventure.

Best Spots For Fishing In Fiji

There are several places near Namotu Island to fish with various kinds of fish. For example, the waters near Suva, south of Viti Levu, are rich with Giant Trevally, Yellowfin and various Marlin (depending on the time of year). The waters around Kaduva, south of Suva, are filled with Spanish Mackerel and Yellowfin tuna. Taveuni, a few kilometres northeast of Suva, is a great place to find schooling species, such as Tuna and Mackerel.

Thanks largely to the ocean's warm temperature, the channels around Namotu Island offer a variety of fish, including Spanish mackerel, Giant trevally, wahoo and marlin. Having said that, if you want to venture out toward Suva, Kaduva or Taveuni, you can hire a game fishing charter boat to make the trek.

The Best Time Of Year To Fish In Fiji

A lot depends on the type of fish you hope to catch. Although numerous species can be found in Fiji's tropical waters throughout the year, some are more plentiful during certain times.

For example, if you want to catch Mahi Mahi, you can do so year-round. But it's helpful to know they make a big appearance twice a year: from December through February and July through August.

Giant trevally can also be found year-round. But the waters around Fiji are especially populated with them between February and April.

Want to catch wahoo? You'll find them in the waters surrounding Namotu from April through October. But they're particularly abundant in July and August.

Spanish mackerel can be found year-round, but tend to congregate around Fiji in August and November through December. The waters swell with blue marlin in February and March; Yellowfin tuna in March and April; and sailfish in June and July.

There's no “bad” time to go fishing in Fiji. As you can see from above, the waters teem with an array of species from January through December. But if you've set your sights on a particular type of fish, it pays to know when the waters are overrun with them.

Many guests who stay at the Namotu Island Resort go game fishing for the first time and discover they love the experience. Make sure you set aside time to fish when you visit the island. Your Fijian bure or villa places you ultra-close to the water so you'll be minutes away from the action!

Latest Trophy Catch

Angler Marc from the USA spend a couple of days GT Popping with us aboard Bite Me Too hoping to land his first ever GT. After a few smaller to mid-sized fish his Cubera got monstered...

Marc reports:

"That last day turned out to be the most rewarding fishing experience I've had.   

Steady rain.  Heavy at times, but a pleasant temperature.  Relatively calm.  High Tide.  Conditions were perfect.  Third cast of the trip, three rips of the popper and all I see is a giant gray shadow come out of the water totally engulfing the popper.  The fight was on as the fish struck at the end of a very long cast.  Drag screaming.  Sikeli was an amazing captain, immediately maneuvering the boat away from the reef as I did battle.  I 've caught plenty of big fish, but none with the brute strength of a GT.  Unbelievable.  The drag of my Stella 18,000 was locked all the way and the fish was still able to take line with ease."

 

The GT Short Length measured a whopping 132cm (52 inches) and was caught on a Heru El-Toro.

The fish was released unharmed although the popper took a bit of a beating !

 

 

Winter Kadavu Fishing Update

Its Wahoo Central now around Kadavu Island !
The Wahoo are thick and we are catching many Wahoo in sized up to 45kg (100lbs).

The Wahoo are not the only species around. We are seeing some nice Pacific Sailfish mixed in as well as Mahi Mahi schooling a little off the reef.

Some anglers are even tossing a few popper at the reef and catching some great winter GTs

The Wahoo will continue to be our main target species for the next two months as well as Sailfish along the outer barrier reef. We expect to still have great winter fishing well into October. With the water temp now hovering just above 24 anglers fishing offshore should also see some Striped Marlin and short billed Spearfish.

July Kadavu Update - Variety !

We are now well out of the normal summer GT Popping season and the Trades have started to push in but so far the weather has been reasonably cooperative - So much so that we are still throwing Poppers and seeing some nice GTs.

 The big story for the next few months of course will be the winter Wahoo run. With the water temp now hitting 26C the Wahoo are starting to gather along the Great Astrolabe Barrier Reef. We expect a good season this year with Wahoo being caught as early as May and the first few Pacific Sailfish also showing. The Wahoo packs should grow to average 25-30 fish with an average size of around 60lbs.

IGFA Anglers Digest Filming aboard 'Bite Me Too'

We have been delighted to once again welcome the IGFA Anglers Digest TV film crew to Matava Resort and Bite Me Gamefishing Charters. Show Host Bill Boyce was here a few years ago in the winter time for some insane wahoo & Sailfish action fishing with BlueWater Magazine Editor Tim Simpson. Bill set the new M-04 Fiji National Record for Pacific Sailfish and both Bill and Tim landed IGFA World Record Wahoo with Tim's fish just edging out Bills for the current M-04 World Record.

 This time around Bill and the team visited during the summer for some GT Popping, deep-water jigging and some summer species trolling and fished aboard our brand new 30ft custom fast offshore centre console Bite Me Too

Glorious weather and a trip out to the Kadavu Seamount found some nice Dogtooth Tuna on jigs, plenty of small Yellowfin and even a couple of marlin bites.
